OTIUM CUM DIGNITATE 2025
Otium cum Dignitate es un proyecto artístico que investiga cómo miramos aquello que la sociedad decide ocultar, regular o estigmatizar. A través del dibujo —inspirado en las técnicas del estudio de la naturaleza y del dibujo botánico— analizo restos materiales del ocio contemporáneo, desplazando su significado mediante una observación lenta, minuciosa y contemplativa.
Los residuos del ocio —lo banal, lo marginal, aquello que queda fuera del relato oficial— se convierten aquí en materia de estudio, del mismo modo que la ciencia observa la naturaleza. Este gesto transforma objetos estigmatizados en formas de contemplación estética y abre una reflexión sobre qué consideramos digno de ser mirado.
La serie de acuarelas sobre papel que presento en este certamen está realizada con una técnica precisa inspirada en los dibujos botánicos del siglo XVIII. A primera vista, cada imagen parece representar una forma abstracta, con una textura cercana a la de un plástico arrugado. Sin embargo, en una lectura más atenta, estas formas revelan un paisaje social oculto que solo algunos reconocerán.
Esta ambigüedad sitúa al espectador en el centro de la interpretación, entre la atracción estética y la incomodidad ética. El trabajo propone así una pregunta sencilla: ¿qué cambia en nuestra mirada cuando el contexto desaparece?
Otium cum Dignitate is an artistic project that investigates how we look at what society chooses to hide, regulate or stigmatise. Through drawing—particularly inspired by techniques used in the study of nature and botanical illustration—I analyse material traces of contemporary leisure, shifting their meaning through slow, careful and attentive observation.
The residues of leisure—what is considered banal, marginal or excluded from official narratives—are treated here as objects of study, in the same way science observes nature. This gesture transforms stigmatised objects into forms of aesthetic contemplation and opens a reflection on what we consider worthy of being seen.
The series of watercolours on paper presented in this competition is executed with a precise technique inspired by 18th-century botanical drawings. At first glance, each image appears as an abstract form, with a texture resembling crumpled plastic. However, upon closer inspection, these forms reveal a hidden social landscape that only some viewers will recognise.
This intentional ambiguity places the viewer at the centre of interpretation, between visual attraction and ethical discomfort. The work ultimately raises a simple question: what changes in our perception when context disappears?
