Cada pieza está construida en torno a un dibujo en acuarela que representa torres inestables hechas de analgésicos, antidepresivos, vitaminas, etc. Sobre esta composición precaria, una pequeña carita sonriente fluorescente, rociada sobre la superficie, se convierte en el punto focal dominante — una felicidad sintética que eclipsa todo lo demás. Los dibujos están enmarcados en blanco con bordes amarillo fluorescente, creando un resplandor que no necesita luz externa. El brillo se siente alegre, casi celebratorio. Sin embargo, las obras están literalmente sostenidas por pilas y torres hechas con los restos reales de los medicamentos que he tomado durante los últimos diez años. Lo que al principio parece colorido y lúdico revela, al observarlo más de cerca, un equilibrio frágil. Entre la naturaleza muerta y el acto de mantenerse con vida, estas piezas funcionan como un archivo material del cuerpo y del tiempo — una acumulación de intentos por mantenerse una misma en pie. BALANCESSTILL-A-LIFE These two installations begin with the language of still life and move it toward a more uncomfortable territory: that of everyday survival. Each piece is built around a watercolor drawing depicting unstable towers made of painkillers, antidepressants, vitamins, etc. Over this precarious composition, a small fluorescent smiley face sprayed onto the surface becomes the dominant focal point — a synthetic happiness that eclipses everything else. The drawings are framed in white with fluorescent yellow edges, creating a glow that does not require external light. The brightness feels cheerful, almost celebratory. Yet the works are literally supported by piles and towers made from the real remains of the medications I have taken over the past ten years. What at first appears colorful and playful reveals, upon closer inspection, a fragile balance. Acuarela sobre papel. 41 x 31 cm . 2023 OTIUM CUM DIGNITATE 2025 Otium cum Dignitate es un proyecto artístico que investiga cómo miramos aquello que la sociedad decide ocultar, regular o estigmatizar. A través del dibujo —inspirado en las técnicas del estudio de la naturaleza y del dibujo botánico— analizo restos materiales del ocio contemporáneo, desplazando su significado mediante una observación lenta, minuciosa y contemplativa. Los residuos del ocio —lo banal, lo marginal, aquello que queda fuera del relato oficial— se convierten aquí en materia de estudio, del mismo modo que la ciencia observa la naturaleza. Este gesto transforma objetos estigmatizados en formas de contemplación estética y abre una reflexión sobre qué consideramos digno de ser mirado. La serie de acuarelas sobre papel que presento en este certamen está realizada con una técnica precisa inspirada en los dibujos botánicos del siglo XVIII. A primera vista, cada imagen parece representar una forma abstracta, con una textura cercana a la de un plástico arrugado. Sin embargo, en una lectura más atenta, estas formas revelan un paisaje social oculto que solo algunos reconocerán. Esta ambigüedad sitúa al espectador en el centro de la interpretación, entre la atracción estética y la incomodidad ética. El trabajo propone así una pregunta sencilla: ¿qué cambia en nuestra mirada cuando el contexto desaparece? Otium cum Dignitate is an artistic project that investigates how we look at what society chooses to hide, regulate or stigmatise. Through drawing—particularly inspired by techniques used in the study of nature and botanical illustration—I analyse material traces of contemporary leisure, shifting their meaning through slow, careful and attentive observation. The residues of leisure—what is considered banal, marginal or excluded from official narratives—are treated here as objects of study, in the same way science observes nature. This gesture transforms stigmatised objects into forms of aesthetic contemplation and opens a reflection on what we consider worthy of being seen. The series of watercolours on paper presented in this competition is executed with a precise technique inspired by 18th-century botanical drawings. At first glance, each image appears as an abstract form, with a texture resembling crumpled plastic. However, upon closer inspection, these forms reveal a hidden social landscape that only some viewers will recognise. This intentional ambiguity places the viewer at the centre of interpretation, between visual attraction and ethical discomfort. The work ultimately raises a simple question: what changes in our perception when context disappears? Edición de 100 ejemplares Resumen: Todo Normal es una autoedición que reúne dibujos y acuarelas desarrollados a partir de mi experiencia en la Rusia post-soviética cuando era adolescente , allá por el 1995 . El proyecto toma como referencia mi expresión “всё нормально” (“todo normal”) para reflexionar sobre la construcción de identidad juvenil en un contexto de cambio social y cultural en el Moscú de los 90 ́s El libro surge como extensión de la exposición presentada en Madrid en 2023 y funciona como archivo visual del proyecto. post-soviética Si te preguntan en ruso ¿cómo estás? Puedes contestar&nbsp; ̋все нормально ̋ que significa «Todo normal”. Es algo así como decir que todo sigue igual que siempre y que nada ha cambiado. En 1995 destinaron a mi padre como agregado aéreo en la embajada de España en Moscú. Yo tenía 15 años y la Unión Soviética acababa de disolverse tan solo unos años atrás. Estuvimos viviendo allí tres años, hasta 1998, y aquella experiencia me marcó profundamente. En esos años viví la feroz entrada de el Capitalismo occidental en una sociedad culturalmente, tecnológicamente y económicamente diferente, que no estaba preparada para la que se le venía encima. все нормальноes un proyecto artístico que reúne una serie de ejercicios plásticos entorno la juventud que creció tras la caída de la antigua Unión Soviética, en un contexto político, económico, social y cultural muy convulso, tratando de encontrar su identidad entre unas profundas raíces soviéticas, la cultura digital y un mundo globalizado lleno de estímulos externos, ajenos y muy atractivos. Esta exposición reune una serie de dibujos , murales y objetos , basados en mis recuerdos de aquellos años, los souvenirs, el folklore ruso y las imágenes fotográficas que la gente cuelga en Internet. “все нормально” Youth identity in post-Soviet Russia If somebody ask you in Russian how are you? You can answer все нормально&nbsp;which means “Everything goes normal”. It is something like saying that everything is the same as always and nothing has changed. In 1995 my father was assigned as air force attaché at the Spanish embassy in Moscow. I was 15 years old and the Soviet Union had just dissolved a few years ago. We lived there for three years, until 1998, and that experience made me deeply impressed. In those years I lived the furious and violent entry of Western Capitalism into a completely different&nbsp; society which was not prepared for what was coming its way. “все нормально” is an artistic project that brings together a series of plastic exercises around Russian youth who grew up after the fall of the former Soviet Union, in a very turbulent political, economic, social and cultural context, trying to find their identity among deep Soviet roots, a new digital culture and a globalized world full of external, strange and very attractive stimuli. This exhibition brings together a series of drawings, murals and objects, based on my memories of those years, souvenirs, Russian folklore and photographic images that people post on&nbsp; Técnica mixta sobre papel 78 x 58 cm NOTA DE PRENSA LA ARTISTA CRISTINA LLANOS RETRATA A LA JUVENTUD RUSA DE LOS AÑOS 90 -La exposición, titulada “Todo Normal”, reúne ideas y especulaciones basadas en sus recuerdos de adolescente, cuando vivió en Moscú entre 1995 y 1998, y también los souvenirs, el folklore ruso y las fotografías que los jóvenes rusos muestran en Internet. -A través de instalaciones y acuarelas, analiza el brutal choque económico, social y cultural entre capitalismo y comunismo, y retrata la búsqueda de identidad y la ira de una generación que lo sufrió. Si te preguntan en ruso: “¿Cómo estás?”, puedes contestar: “все нормально̋”, que significa «Todo normal”. Es algo así como decir que todo sigue igual que siempre y que nada ha cambiado. Es una respuesta taxativa que generalmente invita al interlocutor a dejar de preguntar de forma inmediata. Cristina Llanos vivió en Moscú de 1995 hasta 1998. Recaló en el país con su familia -su padre era agregado aéreo de la embajada española en la capital- y apenas tenía 15 años. En 1991 El Gobierno de Gorbachov sufrió un intento de golpe de Estado por parte de la línea dura del partido Comunista y el KGB, que contribuyó al colapso y posterior desintegración de la URSS. Desde ese año, bajo el mandato de Boris Yeltsin y asesorado por capitalistas occidentales, se implantó una economía de libre mercado y programas de privatización de las empresas estatales creando una clase alta de oligarcas extremadamente adinerados que pronto se vinculó al crimen organizado. Esta desorganización de las estructuras económicas y comerciales provocaron una elevada tasa de paro, aumento de la pobreza, sentimientos de inseguridad e inestabilidad, una gran desigualdad social y una caída catastrófica de los niveles de vida que desembocaron en la gran crisis económica de 1998. Fueron años en que la artista contempló de primera mano la feroz entrada del Capitalismo Occidental en una sociedad cultural, tecnológica y económicamente muy distinta, que no está preparada para lo que se le venía encima. “Todo normal” es un ejercicio artístico en torno a la juventud que creció tras la caída de la antigua Unión Soviética y la llegada de una democracia a Rusia, sustentada por una oligarquía económica surgida de las cloacas del sistema anterior. El contexto político, económico social y cultural de esos años fue muy convulso, y los jóvenes se vieron abocados a encontrar y forma una nueva identidad individual y colectiva entre sus profundas raíces soviéticas, la exaltación de las tradiciones rusas pre-soviéticas y un nuevo mundo capitalista de consumo que rápidamente los iba a llevar a la globalización, pero también a una incipiente revolución cultural y tecnológica -la nueva era digital- que apenas conocían y que venía cargada de estímulos externos ajenos y muy atractivos. Utilizando sus extraordinarias dotes para el dibujo y la acuarela, una de sus señas de identidad, la artista plantea un recorrido anárquico, desprejuiciado, incisivo y a veces violento sobre sus impresiones de aquellos años. Una juventud que vivió la Perestroika, pero cuyo halo estético y cultural sigue presente hoy, herida y en cierta medida aculturizada por el propio proceso histórico, que muestra su rabia con mordiente violencia, que encuentra en el lumpen y lo marginal su razón de ser, que concibe el hecho vandálico como una oportunidad legítima de protesta, encajonada entre los viejos valores comunistas y los nuevos valores del capitalismo oligarca. La exposición, que combina instalación, dibujo y acuarela, es un recorrido anárquico por las estéticas de aquella época: desde las netamente juveniles -luego referidas por los propios jóvenes rusos en sus redes, algo posteriores- a las propias de la tradición: las costumbres, el folclore, la recién nacida industria del souvenir, la documentación de la realidad y los nuevos signos capitales populares que aparecen por doquier: sobre todo de grandes multinacionales del ocio juvenil. En palabras de su comisario, Guillermo Espinosa, “Cristina Llanos pertenece a la primera generación de artistas que abandona el discurso sobre la identidad femenina para hablar prácticamente de casi cualquier cosa, en los mismos términos que lo hacen los hombres. Su obra supura violencia, rabia, ironía, desafectación por la realidad consensuada, apela al vandalismo y la ruptura social como motor de lucha y contiene no pocas ideas de importante valor social, político, económico y antropológico. Un icono de perfección, de entrega, de una aséptica dulzura, al que la madre debe acogerse si no quiere ver cómo peligra su femineidad y su aceptación social. EL PACTO SECRETO nos permite conocer otras imágenes del rol materno, representaciones menos ficticias, sorprendentes aunque realmente estén mucho más dentro de la norma, porque forman parte de la experiencia. Cristina Llanos revela públicamente el contrato que nunca llegó a firmar: CONTRATO. Reunidas las dos partes: una, la madre y la otra, el resto, formado por los ciudadanas y ciudadanos que no son la madre, se decide, sin que sea necesario ni vinculante el testimonio de la parte que hemos denominado como la madre, lo siguiente: 1. Prevalecerá siempre el interés por el no nacido. La parte que corresponde a la madre habrá de silenciar cualquier episodio doloroso o traumático que ésta padeciera, ya sea durante el parto, el período del postparto o durante el puerperio. Cualquier interés de la madre será supeditado a la protección de la supervivencia de la especie y a su trascendencia pública. 2. Una vez alumbrado el bebé, ya sea por la parto natural o por cesárea, y sin atender a las vicisitudes habidas durante el período de gestación si las hubiere, la madre cederá la autoridad moral sobre el nacido al resto, delegando así esta responsabilidad en defensa de lo que podemos denominar como “statu quo”. Esto no exime a la madre de su obligación como productora alimentaria de la criatura. 3. Este acuerdo tiene carácter vinculante y obligatorio para la madre y no estará sujeto al consentimiento de ésta, como tampoco se requerirá de su decisión a la hora de hacerse efectivo dicho contrato. 4. A symbol of perfection, devotion, and sterile sweetness, to which a mother must conform if she does not want to see her femininity and social acceptance put at risk. THE SECRET DEAL reveals other images of the maternal role—representations that, while surprising, are far less fictional than they seem because they are part of real experience. Cristina Llanos publicly exposes the contract she never signed: CONTRACT Gathered here are the two parties: one, the mother, and the other, the rest—composed of citizens who are not the mother. It is decided, without requiring the testimony or binding consent of the party identified as the mother, the following: The interest of the unborn shall always prevail. The mother must remain silent about any painful or traumatic experiences she may have suffered during childbirth, postpartum, or the puerperium. Any interest of the mother will be subordinated to the protection of the survival of the species and its public transcendence. Once the baby is born, whether by natural birth or cesarean section, and regardless of any complications that may have arisen during pregnancy, the mother shall relinquish moral authority over the child to the rest, thereby delegating this responsibility in defense of what we may call the “status quo.” This does not exempt the mother from her obligation to serve as the child’s primary food provider. El reto consistía en crear una obra donde el vidrio fuese el material principal, trabajando junto al técnico del museo. Mi propuesta, titulada Otium cum Dignitate (El ocio con dignidad), consistía en una instalación formada por pequeñas piezas de vidrio con formas orgánicas que reproducian los restos de una fiesta, como si el tiempo de ocio se hubiese cristalizado en el tiempo. El proyecto partía de una reflexión sobre el concepto de ocio, entendido como un espacio de libertad, contemplación y pensamiento. Quería unir dos tiempos distintos: el ocio en el que nace la idea y el trabajo en el que se materializa.Durante el proceso, el vidrio se convirtió en una metáfora de ese doble estado: fluido y maleable al principio, sólido y frágil al final. El resultado fue una obra ambigua: para algunos, las formas parecían pétalos o nenúfares; para otros, lo que representaban, papelinas. Esa dualidad —entre belleza y marginalidad, entre lo que se sabe y lo que se ignora— sigue siendo el eje central de muchos de mis proyectos. In 2017, I was invited to take part in the group exhibition Working Glass at the Museum of Glass Art in Alcorcón. The challenge was to create a work in which glass would be the main material, working hand in hand with the museum’s glass technician. My proposal, titled Otium cum Dignitate (“Leisure with Dignity”), consisted of an installation made of small glass pieces shaped like organic forms that reproduced the remains of a party, as if leisure time had been crystallized and frozen in place. The project began with a reflection on the concept of leisure, understood as a space of freedom, contemplation, and thought. I wanted to bring together two different temporalities: the leisure in which the idea is conceived, and the labor in which the piece is materially produced. Throughout the process, glass became a metaphor for that dual state—fluid and malleable at first, solid and fragile in the end. The result was an ambiguous work: for some viewers, the forms resembled petals or water lilies; for others, they clearly evoked drug wraps. Con el auge de las redes sociales y los reality shows, ha surgido un concepto llamado Extimidad, que convierte la intimidad en un espectáculo. Al sabernos observados, no actuamos de la misma manera que cuando nadie nos mira. Nuestra identidad digital es una versión cuidadosamente editada de nosotros mismos, una selección de momentos que nos favorecen. Pero, ¿qué sucede con los espacios privados, aquellos que habitamos lejos de la mirada pública? El filósofo Adolfo Vásquez Rocca describe la casa como una segunda piel, un refugio que tanto oculta como revela. Cada hogar es un reflejo de quienes lo habitan: su estructura, sus objetos y su desorden cuentan historias sobre su día a día, sus recuerdos y sus pensamientos. A través de los objetos que acumulamos, reconstruimos nuestra memoria y reafirmamos nuestra identidad. En Hogar Dulce Hogar, exploro la casa como una extensión de la persona, un espacio privado que no estaba destinado a ser visto. Entre 2008 y 2010, fotografié sin previo aviso las habitaciones de amigos y conocidos, sin que supieran el propósito. A partir de estas imágenes, creé una serie de acuarelas que capturan esos espacios tal como estaban en ese instante, sin artificios ni preparaciones. Este proyecto invita a mirar lo cotidiano desde una perspectiva genuina, libre del juego de las apariencias. Es una ventana a lo auténtico, donde cada objeto y cada rincón hablan de quienes los habitan. Home Sweet Home (2008-2010)In a world where appearances dominate and we define ourselves by what we show, intimacy has lost its strength. With the rise of social media and reality shows, a concept called Extimacy has emerged, turning intimacy into a spectacle. When we know we are being watched, we do not behave the same way as when no one is looking. Our digital identity is a carefully edited version of ourselves, a selection of moments that present us in the best light. But what about private spaces—the ones we inhabit away from the public eye? Philosopher Adolfo Vásquez Rocca describes the home as a second skin, a shelter that both hides and reveals. Every home reflects its inhabitants: its structure, objects, and disorder tell stories about their daily lives, memories, and thoughts. Through the objects we accumulate, we reconstruct our past and reaffirm our identity. In Home Sweet Home, I explore the home as an extension of the self—a private space filled with memories and ideas that was never meant to be seen. Between 2008 and 2010, I took unannounced photographs of friends' and acquaintances' rooms, without them knowing the purpose. Based on these images, I created a series of watercolors that capture these spaces as they were at that moment, without staging or intervention. This project invites us to observe the everyday from a genuine perspective, free from the game of appearances.
